Gout

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that happens when levels of uric acid (a normal waste product in your body) become too high. When uric acid is elevated in the blood, it can accumulate in your joints and trigger an inflammatory response that causes severe pain and swelling. The big toe is a well-known site of gout attacks, but gout can strike many different joints throughout the body.
