What is arthritis self-management?

Self-management is what individuals do to manage, adjust to and minimize the impact of chronic condition(s) like arthritis in the context of their daily life. If you are living with arthritis, you are probably already doing many things that are considered self-management.


How can I get started in arthritis self-management?

There are a lot of things you can do on your own to manage your arthritis including:

  • Participate in exercise programs
  • Protect your joints by strengthening the muscles around them
  • Maintain a healthy weight and nutritious diet
  • Sleep well
  • Manage your stress
  • Manage symptoms and pain with appropriate over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications
  • Reach out to supportive communities of other people living with arthritis, such as the CreakyJoints Facebook page, for reinforcement of your self-management goals
