While previous studies have shown positive results for mindfulness-based stress reduction or MBSR (including meditation, body awareness and yoga) in patients with chronic pain conditions, a new meta-analysis found little benefit for people with chronic low-back pain. Specifically, the study showed that MBSR may produce some short-term relief and functional improvement, but the improvements are not clinically meaningful and are not sustained over time compared with results achieved through usual care. The authors emphasized that these conclusions are preliminary and that more study is needed via “rigorously designed, large [randomized controlled trials].”
