Between 21 and 26 percent of adult men have hyperuricemia – elevated levels of uric acid in the blood and a known risk factor for gout and other diseases. While studies do not show a clear benefit of treating hyperuricemia, it is recommended that people with this condition get further evaluation to find the cause of the hyperuricemia. These individuals should also be educated about lifestyle changes, including weight loss and reduced consumption of alcohol, which can lower levels of uric acid.
