Primary CV Prevention in RA
There is a two fold risk of cardiovascular disease (CV) in people with RA versus those without. According to Eric Matteson, MD, people with RA are undertreated for their CV risk factors. RA patients who should be getting statins aren’t getting them. Daniel Solomon, MD notes an ongoing UK trial that suggests some protection in RA patients with statins. Because the risk of side effects with statins is low in RA patients, for those with CV risk factors (such as hypertension, an elevation in LDL or any suggestion of underlying CV disease), he says statins are “a reasonable option” even though we don’t have clear evidence-based guidance on this issue. He also discusses the risks versus benefits of aspirin therapy for RA patients.
