Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who are treated with Orencia (abatacept) and other types of biological therapies may be at increased risk of infections, some of which can be prevented by vaccination (e.g., pneumonia).

According to MedPage Today, a study published in Arthritis Research & Therapy found that RA patients taking Orencia may produce less of the main immunoglobulin in the blood—lgG—to respond to the pneumococcal vaccine, however, they will still benefit from the vaccination.

Researchers noted it is important to determine if RA patients treated with Orencia and the likes have normal responses to vaccines overall.
