A study published in Arthritis Care & Research shows patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inactive hepatitis B virus or HBV were safely and effectively treated with Orencia (abatacept) for two years or more, according to MedPage Today. In the article, the study researcher notes for the 72 patients with RA and inactive HBV who were treated with abatacept for two years, there were no cases of HBV reactivation.

Abatacept is a prescription medication for the treatment of moderate-to-severe RA and is commonly offered after a first line therapy like methotrexate fails to work.
