Patient-reported outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis correlate independently with measures of inflammation and structural damage on MRI scans, a new study shows. Specifically, the change in MRI-detected synovitis at one year was significantly associated with changes in physical function on the Health Assessment Questionnaire, pain scores and patient global assessment. No relationship was found between x-ray progression of disease and functional decline over one year, suggesting that MRI may be a better a better indicator of functional decline.
