A new science advisory from the American Heart Association encourages people to sit less and move more based on evidence that being sedentary contributes to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including morbidity and mortality. While it’s unclear how much sedentary time contributes to disease, “clinicians should encourage their patients to accomplish at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day,” Deborah Rohm Young, PhD, director of behavioral research at Kaiser Permanente Southern California in Pasadena and chair of the science advisory, told MedPage Today. The advisory was published online August 15 in Circulation.
