Polymyalgia rheumatic (PMR) is a systemic condition  typically in elderly patients characterized by aching and stiffness of the shoulders and hips. Treatment traditionally has relied on steroids, but drug-related toxicity and relapses are common. A small study of nine patients with recent-onset PMR treated with monthly infusions of tocilizumab and a rapid steroid taper found that all reached relapse-free remission off steroids at six months, and remained in remission at 15 months, with no relapses or recurrences. Similar results were seen in another recent study of 20 patients.
