Take your pain seriously. Dr. Laurie Ferguson, Health Psychologist and Vice President of Education for CreakyJoints says people can be discouraged from seeking help

Ferguson:  “Find a physician who will work with you. They tend to be very skittish about prescribing Op (Opiods) and yet until you get some relief, it’s going to be very difficult to do the other things that can help you manage your pain. It’s very hard to do movement or exercise or think about the things that can improve your mood when you’re dealing with the pain”

Ferguson has observed that people in pain can be dismissed:

Ferguson: “Even when you’re in pain, you have to be your own advocate. Physicians can even shun people in pain. They can be uncomfortable so the work is to find the right match in terms of your healthcare provider who can take you and your pain seriously and help you get the best relief. It may not be 100 percent but there’s no reason to settle for 25 percent”
