Ms. Meniscus,

It’s vacation time. Yay for all of us. Well yay for some of us anyway. I’m looking at a long car ride followed by a different bed, different furniture, more physical exercise and the stress of being with my family 24/7. Any advice for this person with RA who would frankly rather just stay at home?

Happy at home

Dear Happy at home,

Sometimes we take our home, personal space and even our routine for granted. That becomes blatantly clear when we are taken out of this comfort zone and hit the road for what can seem like endless hours to a destination that is unfamiliar and perhaps not quite as plush as what we are used to.

Don’t hesitate to pull over when you feel that you need to stretch your legs. You want to make sure you do everything you can to prevent a possible flare during the family vacation!

Take time to pamper yourself. Schedule a spa appointment. You could even plan something that you know only you would enjoy to get some time to yourself; I’m sure you can think of a list of these.

If you can’t seem to make anything about traveling enjoyable, you could find a destination closer to home or even suggest a stay-at-home vacation the upcoming year. If you stay at home, feel free to splurge on a new large screen TV or trampoline with the money you will save on hotels/flights/eating out! The best part would be that you get to enjoy the comforts of your own home and also get some much needed rest and relaxation.

Bon voyage.
