Persistence is the key to success when dealing with a chronic condition. I’m living proof of this, right now, as I write this and glance under my desk at my poor foot. After months of shuffling from out-of-network doctors (you know who you are) to above-reasonable-and-customary-charging specialists (you have no idea who you are), we’ve narrowed the situation down to the fact that my sesamoid joint has deteriorated away which has caused significant nerve damage. I feel it every step I take, but I’m not letting that get me down!

The current course of treatment requires me to do a lot of “stuff”. Wrapping with coband tape. Icing every night. Applying Voltaren gel twice a day. Using an orthotic. For someone like me who is always on the go, that’s four more things than I’m in the mood to do. But, after two solid weeks of “persistence and compliance” – words I know all too well – things seem to be working better and my foot is slowly improving.

The name of the game these days is “avoid surgery at all costs”. But really, we’re talking about “avoid surgery at the cost of ten thousand dollars” to be more specific. Which is partially the motivator behind actually complying with the doctor’s orders to do this routine every morning and night, but also because I’m literally at the end of my rope.

I also did something yesterday which will probably help me in the long term…I threw out my favorite pair of shoes. The laces were untied in the elevator, and the shoes were in the garbage chute the moment I got home. I can’t help but wonder if those really cool Tod’s were the cause of this all along.

Could be worse I suppose. They could have been heels.
